  5. When I view Mr. Wakui’s work i feel like i am a part of the crowd in Tokyo. His work is really a first person perspective of a truly marvelous city and brings the viewer into the setting. We get a candid view of the city as if we are a citizen of Tokyo and going through the daily routine. I’m especially drawn to his use of color in contrast to the dark settings. The bright pop from the neon gives my eyes excitement and a sense of mystery when i think about Japan’s great city.

  6. The main idea that jumps out to me when I see these photos is the feeling of isolation. The darkness, rain, and lights make the photos give off a feeling of abandoned. Waiting in vain for a lover during a rain storm. Walking alone during a foggy night to yourself, hoping that someone important may cross your path. I don’t know, maybe that’s just me being sentimental.

Looking at these photos, at first glance, I’m immediately drawn to the colors reflecting off the puddles on the ground in the very first photo. The way the neon of the signs reflects off the ground adds to the mood of the photographs. Also, the people holding their umbrellas seems interesting to me, for some reason.

I feel unusually content. I’m a person who loves the nighttime and rain, so seeing a calm night when it’s rainy or foggy just makes me feel right.

  19. In the photos, their are bright colors on led screens and color lights. This is further emphasized by the darkness of the night and surrounding area. This properly shows that the city is just as active at night as it is in the day. The second photo is a bit different than the others as it shows less activities, but the dark wall with area’s of illumination perfectly shows the contract between a warm light and the dark. The use of the yellow lights rather than the normal bright white lights was a good choice.

  20. Some ideas that jump out at me, are he isn’t a simplistic photographer, there is a lot going on in his photos, but it works, it isn’t over crowded to where it looks bad. My eyes are drawn to the lights, and the people on the streets and how they are almost like shadows in some pictures because they are so dark. These photos make me feel like I am actually there, and I am walking the streets Tokyo at night. These photos make me feel this way because of how real they are, these pictures, there was no setting up, fixing the lighting or anything, he just snapped a photo of what he saw and that makes it original.

One idea that jumps out to me is, how he is in a place that is busy with different things to look at and usually you would be distracted by the other million things going on in photos similar to these ones. But he makes it work. Your eyes do go to one main place. My eyes are drawn to the people living there daily life on the street and the lights that show the brightest. When I look at these photos I feel like I am walking on the streets with them. Then I have to look down and realize I’m still sitting in a classroom. These photos also make me feel happy, calm, and relaxed. I think I feel this way about the photos because they have some sort of peace and happiness to them. Also the photos aren’t just a picture of a flower or something they are real life streets, people, and environment.

  35. when i look at these images i notice that his gradient changes allow a lit space to glow with a strong warmth while not overshadowing the features of the dark spaces near it. when i look at them i get a strong sense of wonder and it feels like i’m looking at a picture of a city that is unlike any other place in the world because of the heavy amount of paper lanterns that are present in many of the photos. i am drawn to many elements within these images but i am typically drawn initially to the light of the lanterns which i find to be a much warmer and lulling light than that of the bright city lights but when both are present they do not battle in the image but together paint contrast in the features that the light encompass. the city is very photogenic and japan as a whole is a very beautiful place to take photos of but what he is doing is balancing the light in photo perfectly to being a sense of otherworldly and warm light. the fact the blend of old world with the lanterns and new world with the city lights and busy city atmosphere makes me want to go there for a very long time.

The elements that my eyes are drawn to are the neon lights, the darkness, the hanging lanterns, and usually the places most cluttered. When I look at these photos I am inspired to take better photos because I could end up like that someday. The thing about these photos that make me feel that way is the intricate designs, and the apparent thought behind the photo, no matter how simple.
